Annie came to HRI via a Good Samaritan who scooped her out of traffic after she had been hit by a car. She was found to have a compound fracture and simple fracture on one leg, and a dislocated hip on the other side (plus a fracture of the iliac on that side as well, as they discovered during surgery).
It took almost a week for the Good Samaritan to find us. In that time she was cared for by the wonderful vet who happened to be the closest vet to the place she was picked up. I say wonderful because Annie ended up staying there nine nights before we could get her into surgery at the specialty vets and her bill for the stay was $196.50. Unbelievable!! Most of us have spent that much at our vet’s office when we go in with some complaint and we’re in and out in half an hour!
Annie was a real trouper during that stay, even with the injuries she sustained. She has become very attached to the Good Samaritan, and it seems the feeling is mutual. He is visiting Annie a few times a day and hanging out with her to keep her company. Even with those injuries, she has been trying to play with him.
We finally got Annie into surgery at the specialty vet’s hospital close by. She had the first surgery to repair the fractures on the one leg on Monday, January 7, and the other surgery to surgically correct the dislocation (a femoral head ostectomy) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008. Annie will be staying there until she goes home with her Rescue Angel, Ken, on Thursday. As you can imagine, there has been a flurry of activity getting Ken, the Good Samaritan, approved to foster this little girl he saved.
Annie has a long road to recovery. She will have to do some extensive physical therapy to regain much of her mobility. The doctor’s prognosis for her is good. For now we just need to make sure her pain is managed via good drugs and that she doesn’t pick at her stitches (which she’s already attempted, so yes, she's wearing the fabulous E-collar).
As you can see, Annie is just the cutest! She is all of nine pounds, so she is a tiny little girl. She will go home with Ken, her hero, as a foster to adopt dog. HRI will have her spayed before we finalize the adoption. Of course she couldn’t be spayed now with the other surgeries that she had to have.
We’re estimating that Annie's expenses will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $6,800 - $7,000 when all is said and done. Please keep thinking good thoughts for her as she starts on the road to recovery.
