Allie is a 4 ½ year old Havanese rescued from a mill. In her new life with HRI, she has decided to become an interior decorator. Allie has a passion for stuffed toys, and collects many varieties. She rearranges them in her crate when she feels the need to remodel. She studies them carefully, and if you turn your head she has them moved all around her kennel!
Coming from a puppy mill Allie was never properly socialized as a puppy and still has some of the ‘puppy mill issues’ but is learning to overcome them. She is learning to trust people and as time has passed, Allie’s self-confidence and trust have really grown. She has taken a big step by starting to take a treat from someone’s hand. In fact, Allie’s foster mom says she has become quite a beggar for treats. If she thinks someone has a treat in their hand she goes right up to them asking for it. Allie is a petite little girl at 6 ½ pounds.
Allie is working on housebreaking but that too is a work in progress. She is beginning to know the word ‘potty’ and will go whenever taken outside (every few hours) and expects a treat for doing it. So she does know going outside is a good thing. She’s still learning that going ‘inside’ is a bad thing, and her forever home will need to be patient in continuing her housebreaking. She is getting the hang of running in the grass with ears flying, but she doesn’t have it down pat quite yet. After she’s had her fill of leaves she runs around the yard butting into her sisters trying unsuccessfully to get them to play ‘chase’.
Allie has learned some commands and is working on her leash walking skills. She now goes up the stairs but hasn’t quite gotten the ‘down’ part yet.
Crate training is a work in progress. Allie will go in willingly for her meals but isn’t very happy staying there through the night (a necessity with housebreaking).
Allie is a very non-demanding dog. In her forever home, young children probably aren’t a good idea because of her small size. She hasn’t been around cats but squirrels don’t seem to interest her. Having another dog in her forever home wouldn’t be a necessity and Allie would probably relish having someone’s entire attention. A family willing to give lots of tummy rubs, ear scratches and warm laps will also be a must in a forever home.
