Tony is an easy-going nine-year old who loves to relax, but always has his tail wagging. He loves a sprightly walk and car rides. He makes friends with everyone, children of all ages, fellow doggies, and his trusted humans. He’s even bilingual! Just say, "Let's go to your casa," and he’ll scamper to his crate!
. . . .
Our first dogs were a pair of Maltese pups that grew up with each other for ten years. Sydney and Samuel were the best of friends. Samuel was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in 2014 and we had to let him go. Sydney was constantly looking for him, and when she realized he was gone she was extremely sad. My wife looked for a senior dog to match her age, and we came across Tony. One of the HRI representatives conducted a site visit at our home complete with an interview. I filed the necessary forms and wrote a small declaration letter of what we had planned for Tony. Everything looked good for adoption. The week before we were to pick Tony up, we were vacationing in Corpus Christi and our beach parking neighbor had a small Maltipoo puppy that kept playing with my children. In speaking with the owner, she stated that she did not want the dog and that it was too much of a hassle to have her. I told her that I would call her in the morning, and we would take the puppy off her hands (I was concerned about her welfare) if she still did not want her. The next morning, I met the lady at a gas station and took our new puppy “Lucy” home. I called to tell Angela from HRI about the new addition and let her know we still wanted Tony as well. I could only emphasize that Tony would be part of our family, not able to fully explain to Angela how significant that would be for him. Our family traveled to Houston to meet Angela and Michelle and do a final meet and greet for Tony. We adopted Tony in September of 2014. He was ten years old at the time, and we took him back to San Antonio to begin his merge into our family. Sydney, Lucy, and Tony all fit well and never had “a cross word” with each other. Sydney passed in 2021 at eighteen. We adopted two more rescues, Bentley and Daisy. Bentley was a year-old puppy who loved to play with the older Tony. Tony acted annoyed but would continue to seek Bentley out and make himself available to be bothered. The basics for any pet owner were of course provided for Tony. He had a home, regular medical care, food and water, and any necessary physical health needs addressed. The truly memorable experiences that Tony enjoyed were the same as my wife, son, daughter, and other dogs: Tony slept in our bed, he celebrated birthdays (with slices of cake for everyone) eight times a year, he was spoiled with treats and toys, slept with his friends by the fireplace during snowstorms, wore Halloween and Christmas costumes for parties, went for car rides to drop and pick up the kids from school, enjoyed his walks, and was loved on by the entire family. In 2023 at almost nineteen years of age, Tony began to lose weight and to physically shut down. We took him to the emergency vet and made the decision to let him go due to quality-of-life issues. Myself, my wife, and kids were in the room, and he passed as my wife held him. Lucy and Bentley have been looking for him everywhere and waiting by our garage door to see if we will bring him home. Our family will be forever grateful that we ran across Tony and had him in our lives for almost nine years. He left his pawprints on all our hearts. I know he was greeted by Samuel and Sydney at the rainbow bridge. The Trevino Family
Tony can always be seen with his favorite toy, imploring you with those soulful Havanese eyes to play a game of fetch. If you're not paying attention he comes over and pats you on the knee, ever so gently. How cute is that???
Tony recently had bilateral luxating patella surgery so he comes with rebuilt knees that are good as new! He enjoys being groomed, even his bath. He wants to be prettier than everybody, so he enjoys being brushed and showing off his gorgeous silky coats.
Tony is looking for a forever home where someone is home most of the day. He’s got a super personality and we’re sure he must have gone to the university of "How to be the cutest Havanese ever!" Do you want some laughter in your life? Some fuzzy kisses and clownish antics? This boy will tickle you pink with his sweet charm.
Tony is being fostered in TX.
