Ernie_headshot2Allow me to introduce to you Ernie Bernie Mac, one tough and wonderful pup. Ernie came to us after an arduous and difficult early life. After bring transported to Atlanta, he was immediately sent for his medical check-up because of a bladder infection and to see how his broken right rear leg was healing.

Ernie received several medical interventions but was in increasing pain. The vet advised HRI that, if the leg could be saved, Ernie would always have a problem with it and would require continuing and painful therapy. After a comprehensive consultation, the vets and HRI determined that the best thing for Ernie was to remove the leg.

Many dogs would have buckled under the constant pain and given up. Not Ernie! After several days of complete rest and medication, he began, step by little step, to learn to walk on three legs—tentatively at first, then each day with a bit more confidence. Soon he was trying to chase Buddy and Clyde across the family room—against doctors’ orders—and then removed his own surgical staples! Now Ernie is climbing up onto the comfy couch where he can look out the window to help his foster brothers guard the property against invading squirrels and rabbits. Take a look at Ernie's video, and you'll see the confidence and strength of this sweet boy.

Ernie is house-trained, can go up and down stairs by himself, and understands basic commands. He loves to sleep and cuddle with his foster parents, "scooching" up to their necks and nibbling and tugging at his foster mom's hair (foster dad doesn't have any to tug!).

Ernie is ready to go to his quiet and loving forever home without small children. He'd probably enjoy being an only dog because he loves lots of attention, though he gets along wonderfully with his three foster brothers.

Ernie is being fostered in GA

A donation will be requested to adopt this dog. The recommended donation amount will be based on the dog's age, and medical and behavioral issues, if any.  A completed application is required if you are interested in adoption. Thank you for considering a rescue dog!
